TY - JOUR AB - Atmospheric pollutants have become a serious concern to the Chinese public in recent years due to the reduction of visibility and severe health risks associated with them. In this study, PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and SO2 were measured at a time resolution of 1-hour over the course of a year from January to December 2015 in the urban environment of Qingdao based on the temporal and spatial variations in the concentrations of four air pollutants. We found that (1) seasonal variation exists consistently for all pollutants, with the highest concentration in winter and the lowest in summer. (2) The monthly average of the concentrations of the four air pollutants exhibited U-shaped pattern of "high in autumn and winter but low in spring and summer", and the double-peak or single-peak impulse-shaped daily variation. PM2.5 and PK10 concentrations were lower on weekdays than on weekends while SO2 concentrations were higher on weekdays than on weekends, indicating a "weekend effect". (3) PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and SO2 factors showed strong correlation and low coefficient of divergence (CD) values at nine sites throughout the year, indicating an even distribution across the urban area. (4) Spatial autocorrelation analysis was used to characterize spatial variability showing that air pollutants in urban areas are not produced in the specific local site. The spatial distribution of annual and seasonal air pollution concentrations simulated by ordinary kriging showed that most parts of urban Qingdao suffer from severe air pollution in winter and pollutant concentrations are higher inland than at coastal sites. In this paper, sediments were sampled from Taihu Lake, and dried under natural air, low temperature or freeze, then analyzed using the same method for the determination of total nitrogen (TN), ammonium (NH4+-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N). Statistical analysis of the results showed significant differences between sample treatments relating to the mean TN, NE4+-N, NO3--N concentration. Referring to dry samples, the average content of samples using freeze-dried method and air-dried method, were 1.07, 1.33, 0.91 and 1.01, 1.23, 0.68 for TN, NH4+-N, NO3--N, respectively. NO3--N content of dry samples was the highest. The ANOVA showed that there was no significant difference about TN, NH4(+)(-)N and NO3--N among the three methods. However, there were significant differences. when two methods were compared. The result of LSD showed that there were significant differences between Frozen-dried Method (B) and Dried Method (A) with p=0.039; and between Frozen dried Method (B) and Air-dried Method (C) with p=0.043 for TN. In addition, the correlation analysis results showed a significant correlation at the level of P < 0.01, suggesting that the effects of different pretreatment methods on TN, NH4+-LN and NO3--N extraction are holistic, not due to changes in individual samples. Compared with air-drying, low-temperature drying, freeze-drying process can truly indicate the nitrogen composition of sediments, it is an ideal way of sample drying. AU - Liu, X. In this respect, metrical scientific disciplines like Chemometrics, Environmetrics, Biometrics, Chemoinformatics, Environmental Informatics, etc. support this principle. The effects of environmental contaminants on health are a major concern because exposure is associated with a number of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, congenital malformations and infertility. Hence it is obvious that there is increasing pressure to intensify the research and to more efficiently evaluate the data on persistent and bioaccumulative chemicals in the environment as well as in human bodies. The data analysis method used in our approach is based on the theory of partially ordered sets. This theory is a discipline of Discrete Mathematics and one may consider partial order as an example of mathematics without numerical arithmetic. The graphical representation of partial orders is laid down in so-called Hasse diagrams. In our paper we investigated data-sets of breast milk samples of 130 women in Denmark and Finland which contained measurable levels of 32 Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). The aim of this discrete mathematical approach, supported by the software package PyHasse, is to find differences in the chemicals’ contamination first between Denmark and Finland and furthermore between the healthy boys and those boys who were suffering from congenital malformations (cryptorchidism) in Denmark as an example. We detect differences comparing Denmark and Finland, as well as Danish healthy and cryptorchidism data. This research activity can be regarded as an ordinal approach within sustainable chemistry, on the one hand demonstrating the danger of existing chemicals in the environment and humans and on the other hand methods like these can be applied for finding out more sustainable chemicals. The system provides a connection between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Istanbul and its coastal environment have been strongly affected by wastewater discharges, high population and heavy ship traffic. The aim of this study is to provide a comparison between the chemical and biological analysis of surface sediment samples, which were collected from 17 different coastal stations of the Istanbul Strait, to determine the pollutants and comparable effect related data. For the chemical analysis, PAH, PCDD/F and PCB isotope dilution techniques, and for the biological analysis, Micro EROD (24-h and 72-h) assay were employed. Highest values were found at the most polluted sites due to ship traffic and wastewater discharges. Most of the results of chemical analysis were lower or close to biological analysis, except for the samples from two stations where antagonistic modulators are indicated to be present in the Micro EROD assay. This study suggests that the WWTP discharges into Bosphorus and the heavy ship traffic are important sources of pollution in the sediment, as evidenced by high concentrations of toxic and persistent organic chemicals. Local discharges of the megacity should be further decreased. AU - Basak, S.* AU - Okay, O.* AU - Karacik, B.* AU - Henkelmann, B. AU - Schramm, K.-W. Reactive Red 2 (Procion Red MX-5B) bound to silica gel and cellulose by hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by Fe (III) complexed to Tetra-Amido Macrocyclic Ligands (Fe-TAML activators) at pH 10 was investigated. The performance of the oxidising system was characterized by conducting batch and column experiments. C.I.Acid Orange 7 and C.I. Reactive Red 2 on solid matrix after the addition of the Fe-TAML/H2O2 decolourize in initial time period of 10-20 minutes. The decolourisation rate of dyes on silica gel or on cellulose respectively was much slower than that in aqueous solution. On the silica gel. the degradation mechanism is the same as observed in aqueous solutions, first step is likely the formation of reactive species and the second step is the interaction of the reactive part with the desorbed dyes structure to release various species. The finding about decolourisation of the dyed cellulose leads to the conclusion that that Fe-TAML molecules must enter into the microfibril of cellulose and approach closely to the dye. Thus, the catalyst is not able to completely degrade the dye while bound to a fabric of structure such as cellulose. AU - Braroo, A. AU - Wen, Y.Z.* AU - Collins, T.J.* AU - Lenoir, D. Partly extremely high were the contents of sDDT, mainly in areas influenced by the former VEBC which has produced DDT containing preparations until 1986. The compounds firstly deposited in soil sediments. The prevailing equilibria have been disturbed by several building activities, the constituents of sDDT were released so that they are present until today in partially outstanding amounts. In the vicinity of comparable chemical enterprises at the river Hochrhein (Grenzach, km 160, chemical industry in Basel, CH) and Niederrhein (Hitdorf, km 705, BAYER-Werke), the analogous data in 2000 were clearly lower than at the Teltowkanal, Rudow, km 30, in Berlin. Similar high sDDT loads were found at the tributaries of the river Elbe, Bilina, at the outlet of SPOLCHEMIE, Usti n. L. (Aussig) and Mulde in the vicinity of the chemical enterprise Bitterfeld. The isomers of HCH which was also processed at the former VEBC are much less persistent and only found in traces after 1995. The also very high concentrations of the PCB congeners mainly in the rivers Stadt- and Unterspree have changed only marginally during the time of observation.
