Environmental NMR: Solution-state methods.
In: NMR Spectroscopy : A Versatile Tool for Environmental Research. Weinheim: Wiley, 2014. 3-30
The uniquely versatile NMR spectroscopy is perfectly suited to retrieve significant molecular information from polydisperse and molecularly heterogeneous environmental samples, which are poorly amenable to meaningful targeted analysis. NMR spectroscopy provides the capability for quantitative and nondestructive determination of chemical environments across the periodic table, including isotope-specific arrangement of chemical bonds, connectivities, stereochemistry, and spatial proximity as well as meaningful clues about their dynamics and reactivity. High-field NMR spectroscopy with sensitive detection and enhanced information recovery by mathematical analysis of NMR spectra have decisively promoted NMR-based complex organic mixture analysis. Provided that competitive NMR instrumentation and expertise is available to the highly interdisciplinary environmental sciences, the whole range of multinuclear and multidimensional solution-state NMR spectroscopy will fundamentally advance scientific perception of molecular processes in the environment, revealing in-depth coverage of isotope-specific close range atomic order not available by any other method at present and in the foreseeable future.
