Contribution of particulate emissions from wood combustion to ambient particulate matter in urban environments in Augsburg - Part 1: Emission and ambient air measurements.
Gefahrstoffe Reinhalt. Luft 70, 203-209 (2010)
During the heating periods from 2006 to 2007 and 2007 to 2008 ambient PM(10), concentrations as well as inorganic and organic dust components were measured simultaneously at up to eight sampling sites in and near Augsburg. Based on the emission factors the contribution of primary particles from wood combustion to ambient PM(10) concentrations was calculated. In the city centre at a traffic-orientated site on average 3.4 mu g/m(3) of the total PM(10) originated from wood combustion (range 0.2 to 15.2 mu g/m(3), 2 to 30 %) in winter 2007/2008. About one half each of the PM(10) originated from local wood combustion and from wood combustion beyond the urban area. The results showed that in a residential area with high density of stoves the concentrations of particles from wood combustion were up to 3.7 mu g/m(3) higher than in the city centre - up to a total concentration of 9 mu g/m(3) in the daily average.
