Two herbicides pendimethalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-2,6-dinitro-3,4-xylidine] and alachlor (2-chloro-2',6'-diethyl-N-methoxymethylacetanilide) were investigated under photolysis using aqueous titanium dioxide suspensions and wave lengths 290 nm. The degradation approximately followed first order kinetics. Several products were isolated and the structure determined by GC-MS and NMR. The photodecomposition of pendimethalin in the presence of TiO2 involves N-dealkylation and nitro group elimination and in the case of alachlor oxidation on both side chain and aromatic ring takes place.
