Dissolution of monodisperse, porous cobaltosic oxide particales in the Dog´s lungs and in its alevolar macrophages.

Dissolution of particles in the lungs with subsequent translocation of the dissolved material to the blood is considered to be an important clearance pathway (ICRP 30). For relatively insoluble particles, the dissolution process is slow and is carried out by intracellular digestion in phagolysosomes of macrophages. In the work reported here, we compare in vivo dissolution rates of physically and chemically uniform cobaltosic oxide (Co//3O//4) particles in beagle dogs with in vitro rates found for the same particles in dog alveolar macrophages.
