A database comparison of the aminoacid sequence of the β2-adrenergic receptor from different species predicts in seconds that both the Arg16Gly and Gln27Glu variants are phenotypically benign.1 By contrast, the within-species analysis of the Homo sapiens gene took many years. With the first description in 1993 of all genetic variations of the β2 receptor,2 this receptor immediately became a prime target in many asthma studies.3,4 So why is the current study of Ian Hall and colleagues5 in today's Lancet important?
