Effects of reduced aircraft movements after the COVID-19-shutdown on the concentration of ultrafine particles.

The Freising district council (Kreistag Freising) has initiated a measurement campaign to determine the concentrations of ultrafine particles (UFP) in the area around Munich Airport and the effects of the corona-related lockdown. In the framework of this measurement campaign, concentrations of ultrafine particles were determined with Discmini devices at seven locations in and around Munich Airport from June to August 2020 and, where available, compared with data recorded before the lockdown. The month-to-month values of UFP concentrations during the lockdown in spring 2020 correlates closely with the number of aircraft movements at Munich Airport. In February 2020 the average value was approximately 51,000 1/cm3, corresponding to 1,020 aircraft movements per day. During lockdown, in April 2020, UFP concentration dropped to around 7,000 1/cm³ with 68 aircraft movements per day– an approximately 95% reduction in UFP concentrations in parallel with the decrease in aircraft movements. As soon as the number of flights increased, UFP concentrations again increased. In the airport downwind plume, the UFP concentration is strongly correlated with the distance between the measurement location and the airport. Even with the significantly reduced numbers of flights during the lockdown, 1.5 times higher UFP concentration was measured at a distance of 11 km compared to the upwind concentration. Effective means of reducing UFP generated by air traffic are already available. These include: the desulfurization of kerosene, the electrification of the entire ground traffic at the airport including the use of emission-free aircraft tugs to haul the planes to and from the runway and the avoidance of unnecessary flights – especially flights that can be served by more environmentally friendly modes of transport (e. g. replacement of short-haul flights by rail journeys).
