Polymeric micelles for drug delivery: Properties, designs and applications.

In: Progress and Prospect of Nanocarriers: Design, Concept, and Recent Advances. 2024. 289-326 (Progress and Prospect of Nanocarriers: Design, Concept, and Recent Advances)

Polymeric micelles are nanostructures generated by copolymeric amphiphiles self-aggregating above a threshold micellar concentration and are employed to encapsulate a variety of poorly water-soluble medicinal agents due to their versatility in tailoring diverse molecular characteristics. The rapid development of polymeric micelles as possible targeting carriers has increased the requirement for a deeper knowledge of the fundamental concepts for designing, drug loading, characterizing, targetability, enhancing stability, biosafety, and efficacy using appropriate delivery materials. Numerous formulations of polymeric micelles have progressed to the point where they are either in clinical studies or have been authorized for human use. This piques interest in the topic and emphasizes the requirement for more research into how to effectively develop and deploy micellar carriers to improve medication clinical outcomes. This chapter includes detailed information about polymeric micelles, along with a glimpse of the polymers employed in their production. The use of polymeric micelles as a drug delivery method in a variety of disorders is reviewed along with patents and its prospective uses in the biomedical field are briefly discussed.
