Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause
of death worldwide and a systemic chronic inflammatory disease. It is
caused by factors such as aging and environmental pollution, and
characterized by a dysfunction of the epithelium and immune defense.
Lung organoids allow us to investigate how aging and environmental
stressors impair epithelial regeneration and promote inflammation. These
models enable the discovery of novel mechanisms and therapies for COPD
and its associated comorbidities.
