Translational Research and Clinical Trends in Robot-Assisted Vascular Surgery: A Narrative Overview.
In: Handbook of Robotic and Image-Guided Surgery. 2025. 41-56 (Handbook of Robotic and Image Guided Surgery)
Since its first introduction in the field of surgery, robotics has shown great progress, with many systems entering the clinics and even more getting prepared for their clinical translation. Vascular surgeons, in particular, embraced robotic technologies in a variety of surgical procedures, either open/laparoscopic or endovascular, with the first ones being conducted mainly in specialized centers worldwide and the second ones gaining popularity over the last years. In any case, the needs and promises of robotics in vascular and endovascular surgery have accelerated the relevant translational research to boost the discovery of solutions to improve precision, safety, and therapy outcomes in future vascular patients. In this review, we focus on the current preclinical research and clinical use of surgical robotics within the vascular field while discussing their limitations and strengths and provide an overview of technologies with translational potential from a clinician’s perspective.
