Evolution of hormonal mechanisms.
In: Encyclopedia of Endocrine Diseases. 2026. Vol1-24 (Encyclopedia of Endocrine Diseases ; 1-5)
Hormones are crucial chemical messengers, encompassing peptides or small molecules, that regulate essential physiological and developmental processes. Their receptors range from membrane to nuclear receptors. Whereas the mechanisms of hormone action are increasingly well understood, the origin and evolution of hormonal systems remain still incompletely understood. Nevertheless, common evolutionary principles can be drawn particularly concerning the hormone-receptor couples. Their evolution depends on the nature of the ligand, which itself may change during evolution. Additional evolutionary changes involve allosteric regulation and peripheral control of hormone levels. These insights suggest the origin of hormonal systems is far more ancient than previously thought.
