Background: In the Fr1da study (“Typ 1 Diabetes: Früh erkennen – Früh gut behandeln”), children between 2 and 5 years of age are screened for presymptomatic type 1 diabetes in Bavaria, Germany. Objectives: Here, we show preliminary results on the success and acceptance of the Fr1da screening. Materials and methods: Participation rates, analytic quality, as well as the well-being and the ketoacidosis rates in families with presymptomatic type 1 diabetes were considered as main criteria. Results: Between 2015 and 2017, 72,459 children participated in the Fr1da screening. None of the 223 children (0.3%) diagnosed with presymptomatic type 1 diabetes have had a ketoacidosis event. In 95% of the affected families, no or only mild depressive symptoms were reported after diagnosis. Conclusions: The acceptance of the Fr1da screening among the participating physicians and families is high. It is particularly encouraging that no ketoacidosis has been reported yet in any of the children with early type 1 diabetes.
