Prevalence of murine norovirus in a breeding and experimental mouse facility.

Murine norovirus (MNV) replicates mainly in the macrophages and dendritic cells and has been shown to cause histopathological alterations in the intestine and spleen of mice implying that MNV may have an influence on biomedical research. Our goal was to determine the prevalence of MNV in our mouse facility, which is characterized by different housing and caging systems, by frequent user access to the holding areas, and frequent imports of mice from both academic and commercial sources. Health monitoring was carried out using outbred male Swiss sentinel mice kept on dirty bedding for 12 weeks and investigated at regular six-week or 12-week intervals, Serology was performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and IFA. From the microbiological units examined, in two full-barrier areas sentinel monitoring revealed the absence of MNV, including the core breeding and re-derivation unit of the facility in which re-associated germfree mice are imported from academic facilities showed the presence of MNV at a maximum rate of 69%. The prevalence of MNV was highest in sentinels kept in conventional holding areas (39%), in open-top cages (33%), where user access was medium to high (19-20%), and where mice were imported from academic institutions (26%).
