Burst amplifying system in cell suspension cultures of spruce (Picea abies L-Karst.): Modulation of elicitor-induced release of hydrogen peroxide (oxidative burst) by ionophores and salicylic acid.

The study of the hypersensitive reaction and the functions of H2O2 and salicylic acid (SA) as messenger molecules in tobacco and few other plant species (arabidopsis, soybean) has only yielded insufficient explanation regarding the termination of the programmed cell death and the modulation of the hypersensitive response (HR). The present paper focuses on the interaction between oxidative burst, salicylic acid and the role of calcium as secondary messenger in a spruce cell culture. Evidence is presented that H2O2, and SA-accumulation influence each other and that exceeding concentrations of SA act as signals for the termination of the programmed cell death. From experimental results, a transistor-resistance concept is developed in analogy to an electronic amplifyer which explains the effects observed during HR reactions.
