A critical life event is a distinct incidence which is likely to occur in everyone's life provoking the need to adapt and triggers considerable emotional reactions. Insufficient coping resources in response to critical life events cause adjustment disorders. Stressor events of extraordinary threat and catastrophic impact are a necessary, but not sufficient criterion for the development of a posttraumatic stress disorder.
