Breaking symmetry on time.
Dev. Cell 12, 1-2 (2007)
The habenular nuclei are a conserved relay center of telencephalic function, and they display bilateral asymmetry in many vertebrates. How this asymmetry is constructed in response to local lateralized cues remains poorly understood. A paper by Aizawa et al. (2007) in this issue of Developmental Cell highlights an unsuspected role for neuronal differentiation timing in the generation of structurally distinct left and right habenular nuclei. © 2007 Elsevier Inc.
