The irradiation of personnel working in X ray diagnosis.

The annual radiation dose absorbed by about 1000 radiologists and their assistants who had been working only with diagnostic radiation, was assessed to within very small doses. About 50% of those working with diagnostic radiation had annual doses of more than 12 mrem. Only about 4% of all those working with radiological diagnosis were exposed to doses of > 500 mrem/year, i.e., to more than one tenth of the acceptable annual dose of 5 rem. The dose of 5 rem was exceeded in under 0.5% of cases in 1972, out of about 20,000 people. The dose graph approximates fairly closely to a straight line, i.e. the frequency distribution corresponds to a logarithmic normal distribution. This is useful to know if further conclusions are required. The measuring points show greater scatter in the region of higher doses, due to statistical errors. For practical purposes and in calculating occupational radiological hazards in radiological diagnosis as compared to the dose in the general population, it might also be of interest to know the average radiological exposure of the groups of individuals investigated. At about 160 mrem/year, this is considerably lower than the dose considered acceptable by the ICRP from artificial radiological sources for the population as a whole.
