Resonse of light scattering devices to particles or irregular shape.
2, 33-41 (1987)
In this paper approximations valid for particle sizes d VM LS TH lambda and d VM GT TH lambda (+ZZwavelength) are used to derive some general predictions about the influence of the particle shape on light scattering. For d VM LS TH lambda the particle oscillates like a dipole and the scattering properties of a nonspherical particle can be expressed by its polarisability. In the limiting case d VM GT TH lambda the scattered light can be considered as existing of three components which are due to the physical effects of diffraction, reflection and refraction. The predictions derived from these approximations are compared with measurements on agglomerates of uniform polystyrene spheres using optical particle counters and with observations on electrically suspended single particles of irregular shape.
