Spectral biological weighting functions are a key prerequisite for the risk assessment of the detrimental potential of elevated UV-B radiation. A new function was established for the accumulation of derivatives from quercetin in A. thaliana. In addition to the spectral dependence in the range of UV radiation (290 400 nm) the concentrations were linear increased by the amount of energy from photosynthetic active radiation (PAR: 400 700 nm). Thus, application of elevated UV-B with low PAR background resulted in a strong induction of genes from flavonoid pathway, whereas the combination with high PAR leaded to a moderate induction of this genes. With the help of DNA-Arrays 28 genes were identified, coding mainly for proteins, which implicated an oxidative stress. However, this genes were only induced, when elevated UV-B was combined with low PAR energies. In the most cases solar UV-B radiation is accompanied with high PAR values, leading to the assumption, that leaves of A. thalina have a high UV-B screening capacity in particulary by the means of quercetin derivatives.
