Diabetes prevention can be achieved through lifestyle intervention, pharmacotherapy, or a combination of both. A large number of pioneering, randomized controlled studies have shown that prevention programs can effectively reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes during the intervention phase and keep it low in the years after the intervention. In addition, these studies have also shown a reduction in other morbidity risks, such as the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. The goal of this review is to provide a review of the long-term results several years after the end of diabetes prevention programs.
