Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of heart disease. Nicolas-Avila et al. (2020) now find that cardiomyocytes eject dysfunctional mitochondria in exopher vesicles, which require elimination by specialized heart-resident macrophages, altogether supporting proper heart function.
