Inspired by the known beneficial effects of growing up on a farm on asthma and allergies, we sought to investigate, whether asthma protection by such features would also hold true in urbanized environments. In fact, applying the Farm home Resembling Microbiota (FaRM) index - developed based on bacterial taxa composition typical to that in farm homes, was found protective from asthma also in an urban environment in Germany, however with some heterogeneity in the results between Eastern and Western Germany.
