Hormonal delivery systems.
In: Molecular Pharmaceutics and Nano Drug Delivery: Fundamentals and Challenges. 2023. 103-134 (Molecular Pharmaceutics and Nano Drug Delivery: Fundamentals and Challenges)
Hormones are administered as pharmacotherapeutics for the treatment or management of metabolic disorders like diabetes, hormone replacement therapy, thyroidism, and so forth. Controlled drug delivery is an engineered task particularly for delicate and potent therapeutics like hormones. Drug delivery systems not only provide protection to this therapeutic class but also improved bioavailability in systematic circulation and on the target site. Carriers like liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, dendrimer, polymeric nanoparticles, nanogels, and many more have been explored as a hormonal delivery system. This chapter summarizes the hormones as pharmacotherapeutics and recent drug delivery system-based approaches reported in the literature for controlled hormonal delivery.
